12/13- Friday Favorites #5

Share the love :)

Oh no!!  It’s Friday the 13th- hope you have nothing but good luck today!  It’s been an exhausting week from learning the truth about cheese to preparing for my umpteenth 5k tomorrow at Sea World (should be fun!)  I have been nursing my wounds from my second half marathon this past weekend in West Palm Beach (which I walked because it was too hot and my shoes were too tight.)

So let’s jump into another edition of Friday Favorites-

1. My Vegan cookbooks

Vegan cookbooks

I learned this week that most cheese is made from a calf’s stomach (Cheese is not Vegetarian!).  All that cheese you love is made from rennet which is extracted from a baby cow’s stomach.  While we don’t claim to be full Vegetarians in my house, we do our best to avoid meat and learning about cheese has made me disgusted.  I was thinking I was being kind to animals and kind to my health- but unless your cheese clearly states “Vegetarian Rennet” you are eating a calf’s belly.  Ew.

This has made me revert back to the couple of Vegan cookbooks my Mom had sent me a few years ago.  Thanks Mom!!

2. Pictures and notes on my bathroom mirror

Lenore, Zoey and Sully

Sometimes when Chad knows I am having a hard time struggling with something he will spontaneously write me a note and put it on my bathroom mirror.  It makes my entire day when I get up at 4am to go to work and I see a precious note over the sink as I do my makeup.  There is nothing wrong with giggling that early in the morning.  I especially love the details when he draws the cats like Lenore’s little birthmark she has on her face.  How can you go on and have a bad day with a hand written picture like that?

3. A knowledgeable staff at my local running store

Nike shoes

I ran my second half marathon this past weekend.  It was awful.  It was 82° (I know- the rest of you were experiencing snow and ice.)  That is just too hot to run a good race.  It was terrible.  I walked the whole thing.  To add to my misery my shoes were too tight.  I wore Nike shoes that I bought at a sports store in my usual size 8 1/2.  However, when buying running shoes, always buy a size up to accommodate swelling feet.  Last year, for my first half, I had shoes that were fitted and measured for my feet by my local running store Track Shack.  Thank you for being knowledgeable in understanding a runner’s needs.  I realized those shoes were bigger than I would normally wear.  Hopefully my blisters will heal for my 5k tomorrow.

4. Metromint water

Metromint Water

Have you tried this stuff?  Metromint takes the boring out of drinking water.  Two ingredients- purified water and mint.  No sweeteners, no calories.  I love this stuff.

5. Orchids

Whole Foods orchids

I have never met a plant I couldn’t kill.  I did not inherent a green thumb.  But orchids are my favorite.  They are so pretty that I won’t buy one anymore.  It would be like me getting a tiny kitten and not knowing how to take care of such a precious thing.  Though I think I have done OK with my little kittens.  So far they are still alive.  (Close call though when we forgot to leave out enough food a few weeks ago when we had to go away for a few days.  And they peed everywhere in protest of us leaving them without food.  And water.)  I am saving all the orchids in the world by not having one.  I am saving one orchid from an impending doom.  But I love walking into Whole Foods and seeing the huge Orchid display and feeling happy.

You're welcome for the cheese story. So surprising. I am already marking up my Vegan cookbooks for non-cheese meals!

Great things but my most favorite is Chad’s drawing - I wish you could save it somehow and frame it. What a great thing for him to do for you - very thoughtful and precious :-) I love it.

He draws them on paper and tapes them to the mirror so I do get to keep them. I still have my Valentine's Day drawing hanging up!
