Land O’ Lakes is a town of about 30,000 residents located 20 miles north of Tampa, Florida. No, this isn’t the town where butter comes from, but one could claim some of the best tacos come from here. Specifically from a little spot called Capital Tacos.
We visited after the lunch time hour and the place was still packed. We figured this must be a very popular place for the locals. We totally understand why. The food is excellent. Mr. Beet and I placed our order, then grabbed our license plate table marker and found a place to sit outside.
We had ordered chips and salsa, we loved the tin bucket the fresh tortilla chips were served in.
I tried two of the Vegetarian tacos – the first being the Mean Verde, a taco with fried avocado, refried pintos, queso dip, lettuce, pico de gallo, jack and cheddar cheese, crushed chips, and poblano ranch salsa. It was a bit spicy, but not too bad. The fried avocado was really good, still crispy on the outside and perfectly ripe on the inside.
I also ordered the Simon Frye with grilled portabella mushrooms, black beans, street corn, pico de gallo, jack and cheddar cheeses, cilantro, and bombero salsa. Very good, but I liked the fried avocado much better.
Mr. Beet had the fish tacos- the Longrider – seared ahi tuna dusted in dirty spice, spicy slaw, cilantro, chihuahua cheese, toasted sesame seeds, chipotle ranch salsa. He is not a fan of the usual raw tuna of an ahi taco, and the kitchen was more accommodating. Even cooking the tuna well didn’t dry it out and he really enjoyed the tacos.
I also liked the variety of authentic Latin sodas- my favorite was the Mundet Apple Soda which paired perfectly with my spicy tacos.
Capital Tacos is a great spot and worth a stop if you find yourself in the Land O’ Lakes area. 4 1/2 out of 5 sprouts.
