In a world filled with a Starbucks on every corner, it’s nice to stumble onto a coffee shop that is locally owned and operated. City Coffee Company has two locations in St. Augustine- one in the heart of the downtown historical district and one just outside of touristy area.
We stopped in on a Sunday morning for some bagels and what we left with was so much more. The atmosphere is creative, students from Flagler College studying, writers on their computers and friends gathering for a casual breakfast. The place felt homey and welcoming. Coffee was everywhere.
We placed our order and waited only a few short minutes while our breakfast was freshly prepared in a small kitchen behind the counter. Chad ordered a tuna bagel melt sandwich which he really enjoyed. When I make tuna salad at home, I tend to be a little more generous with the mayonnaise than he would prefer, so he liked the tuna here. It was tuna without all the bells and whistles, without the heavy mayo, relish, onions and other ingredients. It was just fresh tuna on a bagel with a slice of tomato and melted cheese.
He also sprung for the cheese danish which was very good and fresh as well.
I had the Florentine Melt– turkey with provolone cheese, pesto, spinach and tomato- only I removed the turkey. I loved the Asiago bread- the cheese was perfectly melted and the pesto was super flavorful. My sandwich also came with a side of chips.
Other menu items include egg burritos, bagels, salads, sandwiches and smoothies.
This is sure to be a regular stop for us when we are in St. Augustine. There are plenty of options on the menu for anyone’s tastes and lots of coffee and tea selections. 4 1/2 out 5 sprouts.
