Doesn’t Harry Potter eat veggies?

Share the love :)

I recently visited The Wizarding  World of Harry Potter at Universal’s Islands Of Adventure with my family.  I have read a few of the Harry Potter books and seen a couple of the movies, but I am not a Harry Potter fanatic like the rest of the world it seems.

Let me start with the Butterbeer – I had heard it was basically cream soda and it was….but betterWAY BETTER – the  froth on top is a butterscotch caramel cream and when mixed with the cream soda it creates magic in your mouth….   You can order it regular or frozen and you can buy it in a souvenir mug for a little extra.  We had the regular version – next time I will have to try the frozen…

We also tried the Pumpkin Juice– it too was delicious.   Pumpkin Juice is basically pumpkin puree mixed with apple juice.   But be wary – both the Butterbeer and the Pumpkin Juice will set you back about 200 calories each – more than a can of regular coca-cola (140 calories).  But they are both worth having to eat celery and carrot sticks for the next week………..

We also decided to grab lunch at The Three Broomsticks.  (I had an employee in the park laughing at me when I asked him where the Seven Broomstick Restaurant was – just goes to show that I am not up on my Harry Potter speak).  The restaurant looks attractive both on the inside and the outside but we were disappointed with the menu. You have to be a real meat lover to appreciate the food here- they did offer fish and chips if you just wanted to avoid meat but a true vegetarian doesn’t eat fish- and even if you did- FRIED fish? <yuck>   Apparently,  Harry Potter isn’t a vegetarian or even eat veggies……….

We didn’t stay there- we instead hopped over to the Jurassic Park section of the park and found a place called Burger Digs.  The menu was very simple but it did the trick.  Choices were a cheeseburger, chicken fingers or a garden burger.  Then they had a condiment bar where you could pile on your own fresh veggies – made my garden burger so yummy!!

A trip to the WWOHP was worth the Butterbeer and Pumpkin Juice (but then skip the food at the restaurant if you are searching for something other than meat – but hey- if you eat meat  then you will probably love the menu at Three Broomsticks)

And for those of you who do not live in Orlando here are some recipes I found for Butterbeer and Pumpkin Juice you can make at home-

Butterbeer

(recipe courtesy of Sandra Lee of the Food Network)

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/4 cup butterscotch topping
  • 2 tablespoons whipped butter, room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups vanilla cream soda

Combine condensed milk, butterscotch topping, and butter in a glass heatproof measuring cup. Heat in microwave for 1 minute. Remove and stir until butter has melted and incorporated into mixture. Meanwhile heat cream soda in another heatproof measuring cup for 1 minute 30 seconds.

Divide butterscotch mixture between 2 (10 to 12-ounce) mugs. Fill mugs with heated cream soda and stir thoroughly. Serve garnished with an old-fashioned butterscotch candy stick.

Edited: In this recipe the cream soda is mixed with the butterscotch mixture- at the parks the butterscotch mixture is poured on top of the cream soda- almost like a froth on top of cappuccino

Pumpkin Juice Recipe

  • 8oz apple juice, 3oz  pear nectar, 3 tablespoons of pumpkin pie filling, 1/8 teaspoon apple pie spice, 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg. Blend the ingredients in a blender to properly incorporate. Yes, it’s supposed to be a little “pulpy”, just like it is in WWOHP.

"Harry's mouth fell open. The dishes in front of him were now piled with food. He had never seen so many things he liked to eat on one table: roast beef, roast chicken, pork chops and lamb chops, sausages, bacon and steak....."

I've heard so much about Harry Potter World and a bunch of my girlfriends raved about it after going to see if during spring break last year [haha]! I'm not much of a HP fanatic myself, but am interested in seeing it if I'm ever in the area... Pumpkin juice sounds interesting- pretty much love anything pumpkin flavored so I'd be interested in trying it!
