The downtown area of Gainesville, FL is just off the campus of the University of Florida and the streets are lined with quaint little cafes and restaurants.  No major chains here but there is an outlet of the Harry’s Seafood Bar & Grille franchise.  Harry’s has four other locations from Tallahassee to Lakeland.  The restaurant has a New Orleans style menu including Jambalaya and Crawfish Etoufee.

We visited on a weekday evening late and sat outside on the patio.  The weather was perfect, the street was bustling with plenty of people and things to see.

Harry's Bread

We were immediately served bread which was so hot and fresh I knew we were in a for a great dinner.

Fried Green Tomatoes

We started with the Fried Green Tomatoes appetizer.  They were very good.  Fried perfectly , drizzled with chipotle aioli and topped with feta cheese.

Blackened Red Fish

Chad ordered the Blackened Redfish served with smashed red skin potatoes.  His plate was served with an incredibly delicious lemon sauce.  He was nice enough to let me have a bite and it was so tasty I immediately wished I had ordered that instead.

Pecan Crusted Trout

I had the pecan crusted trout which was enormous and I paired it with a traditional New Orleans side of red beans and rice.  I enjoyed it and the fish was so big I could hardly eat half of it, but I wish I had ordered something else as it wasn’t great.  It was more of a cod tasting dish than a good piece of trout.  I liked the red beans and rice too.  My plate had a side of gravy also but I wasn’t sure if that was meant for the fish or the red beans and rice.  I ended up dipping most of my trout into Chad’s lemon sauce.

Harry's Gainesville Menu

Overall we really liked Harry’s.  Next time I will try something else other than the pecan crusted trout.  For some reason it just wasn’t very satisfying.  Still, the menu was pretty diverse and the service was impeccable.  I hear during the Holidays they roll out a special seasonal menu so that will be our next trip to Harry’s.  Yum.

I am very impressed that you can tell the difference between trout and cod especially when it’s fried. There is no way I would be able to distinguish between the two – shows how sophisticated your palette is :-) The fried green tomatoes look amazing.
