Oh my. Oh my. Oh my. Jack’s Cosmic Dogs was featured on the Food Network show “The Best Thing I Ever Ate.” Alton Brown raved about their hot dogs. Specifically the Cosmic Dog with blue cheese slaw and sweet potato mustard.
I looked up this place online before we arrived into Charleston and discovered they offered tofu dogs and a carrot dog. I have read about making a Vegan Carrot dog but have never seen it on a menu. Until now. We had to go here.
Outside of Charleston in Mt. Pleasant, SC, Jack’s Hot Dogs sits off Hwy 17 on the way into (or out of) town. There isn’t too much around it and can be easy to pass by. It looks like a run down dive bar with a gravel parking lot. Very Southern.
There is a variety of toppings for their dogs. Well, if it is good enough for Alton Brown it is good enough for me- only substituted with a Tofu dog. When I first saw my hot dog I had to check just to make sure they didn’t give me regular meat. It looked like the real thing. After a few bites I told Chad that they made a terrible mistake and gave me real meat. I had to ask again. I was told people ask all the time and don’t believe they were served tofu. I didn’t believe it either. There is no way I was given a tofu dog. The poor girl working said people get mad at her because they don’t believe her. I didn’t believe her either. This hot dog was smoked and tasted exactly like what I remember a good old fashioned mixed up meat dog tastes like. And the blue cheese slaw was amazing on it.
Don’t even get me started on the sweet potato mustard. Absolute Heaven.
We also ordered the Bunny in a Bun– a grilled carrot served on a bun. Only it wasn’t really a dog- it was grilled shredded carrots served with the sweet potato mustard and regular slaw. Absolutely amazing. And for only $1.95 a piece I could eat ten of them.
Chad also ordered the Black Bean burger, also served on a hot dog bun with salsa, slaw and sour cream. He liked it a lot.
And the fries were the greatest thing in the word dipped into that sweet potato mustard.
Very nostalgic, Jack’s also serves NeHi soda and Cheerwine. Ever had Cheerwine? It is an institution in the Carolinas- a cherry flavored cola sweetened with cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. I regret not having one while at Jack’s. I am not worried though- we will most definitely be back.
The girl that was working was also incredibly sweet. When she learned we were from out of town she recommended other restaurants for us to try while we were in town. Super nice of her.
In all our travels through South Carolina this was my most favorite place. Not just one of my favorite places, my absolute most favorite!! This is an absolute must for any Vegetarian. This is an absolute must for anyone. Do not miss Jack’s Cosmic Dogs.
