Chad and I spent some time downtown exploring some of the area restaurants thanks to the citywide Bite30 promotion in June. One of the participating restaurants of Bite30 was Kasa Restaurant and Bar. Like most of the eateries in downtown Orlando, we would most likely never have found this spot if not for Bite30, however, I am glad that we did. In our minds, the restaurants in downtown are reserved for office workers and are primarily open for lunch Monday thru Friday. However, our thinking has changed since we have spent a little time downtown. There are some real great places to eat!
Kasa does have odd hours compared to other restaurants not in the downtown area. No dinner on Mondays, no lunch on Saturdays, brunch on Sundays and late nights with no defined closing time Wednesday thru Saturday. The restaurant itself is on Orange Avenue, the main thoroughfare of downtown. The space curves along the block with huge windows, leaving the dining room bright and airy but skinny if that makes sense.
First up we ordered the Yuca fries with queso fresco and garlic ketchup. We each had our own order but we easily could have shared. Big thick cut of the Yuca vegetable, similar to a potato but slightly more bitter. Yuca to me has always been primarily tasteless of nature so the fresco and ketchup were needed for flavor. They were almost so thick and hearty that as an appetizer I considered them to be quite filling. Normally the Yuca fries are served as a side but for the Bite30 menu they were offered as an appetizer.
Chad enjoyed the Citrus Salmon and Orzo Pasta as his lunch entrée. Though it was small in size, it was very filling for him. The salmon was perfectly prepared, very moist and flaky.
I went with the Crabcake BLT for my meal, minus the bacon. The sandwich was light and airy compared to most crabcakes that tend to be dense and heavy. That does not mean that it was lacking in “crabbiness”- quite the opposite. The crabcake has a wonderful flavor with a thin but crispy coat of breading. Garnished with a lettuce and tomato, it was perfect for lunch.
My BLT was served with a salad as well- much better than the Yuca fries. You can just never go wrong with a salad sometimes.
Kasa is a great spot for lunch. It was quite busy and we were forewarned that the service may be a little slower until the kitchen can catch up with the lunch rush. However, we experienced no delays and were served promptly. Just be sure to check the website for their hours before making a special trip there.
