*I was provided compensation in exchange for my honest review of the new seasonal menu at Marlow’s Tavern. All opinions are my own*
I was recently invited to Marlow’s Tavern in Tampa, Florida to experience a few of the new items on their ever changing seasonal menu. If you have not been to a Marlow’s Tavern, it is well worth your time as this is not your typical chain restaurant. Food is made from scratch daily and the menu changes according to the availability of seasonal ingredients. Here you will not find fried potato skins and mozzarella sticks, but you will find Asparagus Fries and Fresh Burrata Mozzarella on the snack menu, and favorites like Chicken Milanese and Shrimp & Grits offered as entrees. The first outlet opened in late 2004 in Alpharetta, Georgia and has now expanded to 16 locations in Atlanta, 4 in Orlando and 1 in the Carrollwood location of Tampa.
Mr. Beet and I started with the Marlow’s Famous Hummus starter. Though not a new item, the hummus is so tasty it is hard to pass up. Pickled okra, however, is a new addition to the hummus plate and if you have never experienced okra in pickled form, you are missing out. I think Marlow’s should serve a plate of okra alone as a snack. Cucumbers, radishes, carrots and toast points round out the platter. The best part is the addition of spiced pumpkin seeds to the hummus itself.
We also had an opportunity to try the new Firecracker Shrimp starter and it too was pretty amazing. Tempura battered shrimp dredged in a sweet and spicy chili sauce, not too sweet, not too spicy.
Mr. Beet tried the Grilled Atlantic Salmon, one of the recent additions to the menu. A generous cut of salmon, brushed with a chipotle lime glaze, served over a bed of hominy hash, green beans, sweet corn and tomato. Topped with a poblano sauce and crispy tortilla strips, the dish is spicy without being overbearing. The salmon was perfectly cooked with just a tiny hint of lime flavor.
However, the star of the meal was my Pan Seared Barrammundi. Barramundi, also known as Asian Sea Bass, is a mild and flaky white fish and is widely popular in Thai cuisine. Marlow’s Tavern serves this barramundi with a scallion crust over quinoa “fried rice” with edamame, carrots, cabbage, ginger and a sesame soy glaze. I could not stop raving about the perfectly crispy crust and the mellow flavor. Even Mr. Beet loved it.
Other new menu items include the Bahn Mi Chicken Wrap and the Marlow’s Melt, a juicy burger served with caramelized onions on toasted rye. And did I mention dessert? We tried the new House Made Cheesecake made with peanut butter and milk chocolate on pretzel crust drenched in a salted caramel sauce. And it was delicious. I am kind of excited about the cheesecake.
The wonderful folks at the Tampa (Carrollwood) Marlow’s Tavern location have generously offered a $25 gift card to one of you lucky readers, good at any Marlow’s location. Are you ready to try the Pan Seared Barramundi for yourself? Enter via Rafflecopter below.
