Along the banks of the St. John’s River just across from the skyline of downtown sits an icon on the Jacksonville restaurant scene for more than 20 years.  I have always thought this was merely a glorified brewpub- a place where the locals gather to chug beer and eat wings and burgers.  I was very wrong.  Wings and burgers don’t even exist on this menu.

Instead, the River City Brewing Company offers up some fantastic southern style fare including a Lobster Po’ Boy, Fried Green Tomatoes and Shrimp and Grits.

I did not partake in any of the beer as I was there for a quick lunch during a workday.  I arrived at 11am and by noon the place was packed with local business men and women, leading me to believe this is a popular place for a power lunch in the Jacksonville area.

Coconut Crusted Shrimp River City Brewing Co

I started with the Coconut Crusted Shrimp appetizer.  Six extra large shrimp placed atop a horseradish-orange marmalade sauce.  It was delicious.  The shrimp had a slight coconut flavor that paired well with the spicy and sweet marmalade sauce.

I also ordered a half-sized portion of the Goat Cheese and Golden Beet salad.  Normally served with prosciutto ham, I asked to have the ham left off which was not a problem for the kitchen.  In addition to the goat cheese and beets, the salad also had candied walnuts and mixed in a mango balsamic vinaigrette.  It was a nice lite salad to accompany the coconut shrimp.

The atmosphere was nice though the décor was very dated.  However, views of the Jacksonville skyline made the restaurant unique and obviously a popular place.  I have passed by here at night when people are sitting out on one of the many decks overlooking the river.  By day, this is a place for a business lunch, by night, the River City Brewing company turns into a great spot for Happy Hour with friends.  The restaurant also offers brunch on Sundays until 2:30pm.
