Say Cheese Pizza and Wings opened four months ago in Bunnell, FL- 20 miles northwest of Daytona Beach and halfway between Orlando and Jacksonville. Chad and I have stopped here a few times as their Grama Pie has quickly become one of our most favorite pizza pies in Florida. I complain all the time that it is difficult to find decent pizza in this state. I do have my favorites that destroy my theory, however, and Say Cheese is one of them that has catapulted to the top of my list.
First, the Grama Pie. A Silcilian style crust stated in the menu as having a “plum garlic tomato sauce.” There is something unique in the sauce that I can’t figure out. I have tried to get the secret out of Steve, one of the Say Cheese owners, but he just smirks keeping his secret all to himself. Whatever it is, it is delicious. The sauce is sweet, tangy, spicy and mild all at the same time. The crust is perfectly golden and the cheese is ooey gooey- the whole pie is amazing. By far our favorite.
Co-owner Rich specializes in their delicious pizza pies. This particular day he was whipping up a White Pizza with Spinach– seasoned with a little garlic, ricotta cheese and spinach. The spinach is sauteed first then added to the pizza as it bakes. Also delicious.
Besides serving up some great pizza, they have a menu with sandwiches and wraps. The Buffalo Chicken Wrap, the spicy Cajun burger and the “Say Cheese” wrap (a hot dog wrapped in a tortilla with chili, cheddar cheese and deep fried.) We tried the Grilled Mahi Wrap. Seasoned and spicy Mahi Mahi is wrapped in a tortilla with lettuce, tomato, cucumber and a house-made Dijon Horseradish Sauce. Very tasty.
Lastly we ordered the “Say Bleu Cheese” Salad. Sweet and Spicy greens (Mesclun) mixed with tomatoes, cranberries, walnuts and crumbled bleu cheese topped with a low-fat Raspberry vinaigrette. Not something you would normally find in a pizza and wings joint but then again, Say Cheese isn’t your average pizza and wings restaurant.
Co-owner Steve used to make wings at a local bowling alley and developed quite a following. The wings here are never frozen. He cuts them up fresh every day. There are many ways to order the wings including suicide hot, BBQ or Teriyaki. There’s also garlic parmesan and butter parmesan for the more mild at heart. He also makes his own homemade Bleu Cheese dressing to dip your wings.
Say Cheese is open 7 days a week with later hours on Fridays and Saturdays. Anything on the menu can be ordered for take out or enjoy your meal in either the indoor or outdoor dining area. An easy five out of five sprouts from this Hungry Sprout.
