A Setback: From Surgery To Running

Share the love :)

From Surgery to Running. I am chronicling my journey from having foot surgery to running again. I had surgery on December 5, 2014 for a bunionectomy which required the breaking of my foot, removing some bone, then receiving 2 screws to hold my foot back together. The recovery process is three months before I am allowed to begin running again. Sad smile

I’ve been wrapped up again…..

Bunionectomy setback

Everything was going swimmingly well. My foot has been healing nicely, the bones have been aligning perfectly, the pain has mostly gone away and I’ve about returned to being normal again (minus the running). Then, late last week my foot became swollen and I kept hearing a popping sound as I walked. Of course, in looking up “popping sound after a bunionectomy” I learned that…

  • The screws have popped out of my bone and are floating around my foot.
  • My foot will need to be amputated.
  • I only have 6 weeks to live.

I also learned to NEVER look up medical stuff on the internet. Oy. I called my Doctor, Dr. Estrada at The Orlando Foot and Ankle Clinic and he wanted to see me immediately. Turns out I have fallen behind in my recovery. While the bone should have healed by now, my healing just stopped.

I’ve been walking on my foot too much which caused the severe swelling and the popping was a cause of that. My screws were still in place and I was going to get to keep my foot.

Soft Cast Surgery

However, Dr. Estrada had to set my entire foot in a soft cast and ordered me into a ski boot. He also ordered me to stay off my foot and keep it elevated for 72 hours.

Ew. So now I am back to Chad doing the cooking for the weekend and keeping my TV remote close. And boy- even a soft cast is painful as I could really feel the swelling.

However, I still hope to be starting my running soon- hopefully in another 6 weeks, about 2 weeks behind schedule. But for now this is not fun anymore. I’ve got those Rock and Roll Marathons calling my name!

Soon my pretties…soon….

So glad to hear that your internet searches didn't end up being relevant to your case! I hope you healed quickly after seeing your doctor, thanks for sharing!

I tore my ACL a couple of years back, and I was miserable. But if you stick with the 'doctor's orders', and get plenty of rest, you'll be back up and running in no time! :)

Oh goodness, I'm glad you didn't have to have surgery again! Hopefully your recovery went well. And those running shoes are adorable. I'm on the couch thanks to an ankle injury, and my pretty blue and lime Saucony Triumphs are calling my name.
