Road tripping through Alabama, Mr. Beet and I have found some really cool places to stop and eat. We found cake balls in Mobile and epic Bloody Mary’s in Orange Beach. And on recent trip through Birmingham, we found a place called Wasabi Juan’s that serves sushi burritos. What is a sushi burrito? It is exactly what it sounds like – a cross between a sushi roll and a burrito- think sushi rolls on steroids, but without the steroids.
Located just west of downtown Birmingham in the Avondale neighborhood, Wasabi Juan’s is nothing flashy or eccentric. However, step inside and it’s game on – starting with the 4:20 Nachos. Get this – nacho cheese Doritos, spicy Tuna, avocado, unagi (freshwater eel) sauce & spicy mayo. Unusual? Yes. Interesting? Yes. Delicious? That’s an understatement.
These nachos are perfect for the lover of munchies. However, I, probably along with a lot of other people, assumed this dish was imagined over some epic pot smoking session. But as you exit the restaurant you can’t help but notice the sign over the door- a quote from the bible Romans 4:20 – “Abraham never waivered in believing God’s promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger and this brought Glory to God.” Fascinating. So now it is a complete mystery how the idea of combining nacho cheese Doritos and raw tuna has come to be.
My non-raw fish loving Mr. Beet tried the Hippy Burrito – a veggie roll/burrito with avocado, cucumber, jalapeno, cabbage and sun-dried tomatoes. And he loved it.
There is a variety of burritos made with cooked ingredients like chicken, steak and shrimp. However, I wanted to try their fan favorite burrito – the L.H.M., also known as the Lord Have Mercy Burrito. Spicy raw tuna, shrimp, avocado, unagi sauce, spicy mayo and cream cheese. I feel like it looked spicier than it was, however, I am a wimp when it comes to heat. I appreciated the kick, but it didn’t overwhelm me.
We also wanted to taste the coleslaw, which of course was not “normal” slaw. This was mango slaw and it too was delicious. Perfect for cooling your mouth between spicy bites. And there are plenty of spicy options including the Ignition Burrito with jalapeno and sriracha, and the Cabo tacos with spicy crab. But if spice isn’t your thing, try the Aloha Burrito with tuna and macadamia nuts, or the JTH Burrito with tuna and apples.
Wasabi Juan’s was an easy drive off the interstate so we didn’t feel like we had to go out of our way, although it would still be worth it if we had. An easy 4 1/2 out of 5 sprouts.
