I am very excited to be partnering with Trip Advisor for this post. I was asked to share a favorite meal I had at a restaurant while traveling. For me, it’s easy. The BBQ Pulled Squash Sandwich at Butcher and Bee in Charleston, SC.
First of all, I found this restaurant on Trip Advisor. I find all of my great travel dining on TripAdvisor.com. I usually type in the city I am going to visit and begin to scroll through the restaurant list as dining options are listed by popularity rank. I love it especially when I am unfamiliar with a city. With more than 250 million reviews by people who travel like you and me, I trust the site for the real inside scoop. Plus, with over 3 million restaurants listed I feel like I can find a place that will suit me and my vegetable ways. I love being able to scroll through menus on my own time and plan my trip accordingly. Plus I can often make reservations at restaurants right through the Trip Advisor website.
So the Trip Advisor Traveler’s Choice Awards for restaurants are based on an algorithm that takes into account the quantity and quality of reviews over a 12-month period. While Butcher and Bee didn’t top the list of Trip Advisor’s 25 Traveler’s Choice Restaurants, they top my list. (See what restaurants did make the worldwide list here –> Trip Advisor Traveler’s Choice winning restaurants)
So here I was looking for hip and stylish Vegetarian-friendly places to eat in Charleston and I found Butcher and Bee. But here’s the thing- there is no menu online and I will tell you that I never visit a restaurant without seeing the menu first. I hate when restaurants don’t have a menu online. However, while Butcher and Bee don’t post their menu on their website, they do post it on Facebook. The reason is because the menu changes daily.
On the particular day I wanted to eat there I found the menu for that day on Facebook and immediately got in my car (rental) and drove there. I knew I was in for a treat. Curried Brussels sprouts, Kale Slaw, Pickled Radish Falafel……I was wootin’ before wootin’ was cool.
The Southern U.S. is known for its’ amazing BBQ houses and Charleston has plenty of them. Unfortunately, 99% of all BBQ places have nothing on the menu for a non-meat eater (besides side items) so we never go out for BBQ anymore. I used to love pulled pork back in my meat eating days and I definitely still ache for it sometimes. Well Butcher and Bee must have heard my cries as they were serving a BBQ Pulled Squash Sandwich that very day.
I had never heard of BBQ Pulled Squash before and why not? Why don’t more places serve it? Why are Vegetarians so forgotten when it comes to BBQ? Well one bite of this pulled squash sandwich and I knew they were on to something.
That was a really fun trip as I visited Myrtle Beach, Charleston and Savannah and I came back home to Orlando with a laundry list of inspired meals I needed to make. However, the BBQ Pulled Squash is the one I made first, the one I make the most and my most favorite dish of everything we tried on that trip.
Here is my recipe- Vegetarians no longer need to miss out on BBQ. I’ve got you covered:
So my questions to you- do you use Trip Advisor to find hotels, restaurants and attractions anywhere you want to travel? What has been your favorite inspired dish you had while traveling?
