I am such a huge fan of all things Broadway, from the songs to the costumes to the stage itself and I have seen hundreds of musicals in my day. However, very few have been quite as spectacular as WICKED. If you have not seen the show, hurry fast and get your tickets. WICKED will haul out of Orlando at the end of January. And you have not been to the new Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts yet, this is the show you will want to come see.
Here are three reasons why YOU have got to get your tickets:
1. The story.
WICKED is sort of the prequel to THE WIZARD OF OZ. Only instead of focusing on the farm girl, the story follows the beginnings of The Wicked Witch of the West. And she has a name. It’s Elphaba. Who knew? There are so many cute little side storylines as well that will intrigue any fan of the 1939 film. We learn why not only about the witches, but also the origins of the lion, the tin man and the scarecrow.
2. The singing.
The musical numbers are not in our popular mainstream culture. However, I found myself hanging onto every note sung by Jessica Vosk in the role of Elphaba. The high notes were plentiful, her voice was amazing and her comedic timing was perfect. The show is incredibly funny and quick witted and the entire cast didn’t miss a beat to garner a laugh. But it was the singing and dancing that really stole the show.
3. The costumes.
I love theatrical costumes. I love the creativity and it is no wonder why this show has won the Tony Award for Best Costume Design. I especially loved the wacky fun costumes the Denizens of Emerald City wore. And the makeup…don’t get me started on the makeup!!
OK people, you have until January 29 to see WICKED here in Orlando or catch the show in Tampa through the month of February. After that, the Yellow Brick Road will be rolled up and moved north. See the WICKED North American tour dates here.
