How Beauty and the Beets Got Its Name

Share the love :)

Just a few weeks ago I attended the BlogHerFood Conference in Miami which I have talked about just a few times here on the blog.  A blogger conference to a blogger is like a Star Trek convention to a Trekkie.  It’s the bloggers version of Comic-Con.  I sat in a large room and realized I was surrounded by a group of people who all had something in common.  We were all passionate bloggers.

Bloggers are a bit geeky.  Most of us know a little about computers and coding.  Most of us know how to manipulate our Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) or our Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to get our blogs to look just as we’d like.  And we love to attend conventions and meet each other.  When we meet each other, we exchange our business cards.

What I ran into most was people commenting about my blog name.  People saying how creative.  People laughing.  People saying it was catchy and cute.  And so many asked how it came to be.

Here is the short and simple story……

When I knew I wanted to start writing online, Chad and I sat for days trying to come up with some clever name for my blog.  I honestly can’t even remember some of the rejected titles we thought of.  The name “Beauty and the Beets” just popped into our head one day and we knew it would be just perfect.  Here’s why…..

Beauty and the Beast cast

Now, as many of you know, I used to dance at Walt Disney World.  I was in the opening cast of the “Beauty and the Beast” stage show at the Disney/MGM Studios (now known as Hollywood Studios).  I loved our show, I loved the movie.  The show opened the same day as the movie (November 1991) and is still being performed to this day.  That’s a long life for a Disney stage show.  I danced with an oversized teapot and a cranky clock for two years.  It was like a coming of age thing for me.

So “Beauty and the Beets” was kind of perfect for me.

While at BlogHerFood I had the opportunity to meet Ree Drummond a.k.a. The Pioneer Woman from the Food Network.  I told her I wrote Beauty and the Beets and she said “what a great name, I love beets.”  Funny thing is I have rarely used beets in any of my cooking.  Though I do love beets.

But beets are vegetables and everyone knows I adore my veggies.  So “Beauty and the Beets” was perfect for me in that sense too.

And then there is the age old question I get asked often…who is the Beauty and who are the Beets?  Well, collectively we are all the Beauty.  Individually we are all a Beet.  I am the Head Beet.  Chad is the Beet of Business.  My Mom is my Beet of Post-Editing.  The three furballs are my Research Assist Beets.  Most people have Peeps.  I have Beets.

Beets behind the scenes

So there you go, the story behind the name.

If you were going to start a blog, what would you name your blog?
