Who doesn’t love macaroni and cheese? I grew up on the stuff in the blue box and I am not ashamed to admit that I still love it. But sometimes, nothing beats the real homemade stuff. I found a place in the center of Philadelphia that makes nothing but the homemade stuff, with a ton of variations to please any palate.
Mac Mart started as a food truck but has since opened a location on South 18th Street in Center City near the Rittenhouose area. But they offer the same great dishes at their brick and mortar shop that they were known for on the food truck.
For example, the Corndog in Cup is a dish of classic macaroni with beef hot dog bites, cornbread crunch, and a drizzle of ketchup.
Or maybe you would prefer the Crabby Mac with jumbo lump crab meat and an Old Bay panko crunch.
Perhaps mix it up with some BBQ sauce and chicken.
I chose The Rittenhouse – a bowl of classic mac topped with creamy cheese, garlic sautéed spinach & artichoke dip, and potato chip panko crunch. And it was delicious. Yes, better than the blue box stuff. It was a wonderful mix of a spinach and artichoke dip combined with cheesy mac.
Mr. Beet went with the classic Mart’s Mac, the 7-cheese macaroni with the potato chip panko crunch. He loved it as well. Simple and Vegetarian.
And for a twist on a classic grilled cheese sandwich, try the Return of the Mac – mac and cheese between two slices of Texas toast grilled with American cheese. Mmmmmmm.
I love the simplicity of Mac Mart and the quickness from order to table. I am hoping they expand (maybe into the Orlando market?) 5 out of 5 sprouts.
