One a recent visit to New Orleans, Mr. Beet and I found a cozy little hotel right in the heart of the French Quarter. We were surrounded by an abundance of incredible restaurants but we found one place we at at a few times, simply because it was that amazing. I love when we find a place during our travels where we are made to feel at home, and Meals From The Heart Cafe was that place for us in New Orleans.
The French Market is a great collection of vendors right in the French Quarter. If you can’t find it at the French Market it probably doesn’t exist. There are many markets selling everything from baked goods to specialty cuts of meat to tableware. And there are also plenty of places to stop and grab a bite. We found a spot called Meals From The Heart Cafe, a small counter restaurant with a handful of barstools for one to sit and enjoy a meal. The service is quick, and the suggestions are plentiful.
The signature house dish is the Crab Cake Passion – the crab cakes are no joke. No fillers, just crab meat, a few veggies and spices and baked to golden crispness. Pretty perfect.
Served over a simple bed of greens and tomatoes, the Crab Cake Passion was amazing.
Mr. Beet tried the Black Bean Patty Burger served with a side of steamed vegetables. Serious home cooked food. The black bean patty is made in house, not too spicy but very hearty. Mr. Beet loved it so much, he ordered it the next time we visited Meals From The Heart Cafe.
On our second visit, I tried the Black Bean Soup. Black Bean Soup is an easy menu item to make, but not an easy dish to master. Meals From The Heart Cafe does black soup right. It was delicious. And certainly filling enough to be a meal on its own. But……
…..I also tried the Portobello Mushroom Sandwich – mushrooms sauteed with vegetables on a wheat grain bun. I loved it. Squash, tomatoes, zucchini and carrots along with the mushrooms made this sandwich filling and satisfying.
One touch that was really nice was the basket of orange slices served before every meal.
We got a lot of great information on New Orleans just from talking with the staff. And it was so nice to be remembered when we sat down for the second time at their counter.
We will absolutely eat here again the next time we are in New Orleans. Meals From The Heart Cafe is a great spot if you want to really taste the authenticity of the city, not only in the food but also in the friendly service. 5 out of 5 sprouts.
