An entire restaurant based around calzones. Why isn’t this a thing everywhere? Sauce on the Side is a calzone restaurant in St. Louis and they serve….calzones. What is a calzone anyway? It’s basically a pizza with toppings folded over before cooking. And it makes this amazing pocket of cheese and sauce you eat with a fork. I hope you’re hungry because Sauce on the Side doesn’t make just any ol’ calzones, they bake up giant sized calzones as big as your head.
There is a menu of fifteen different calzone flavors – from the Cock-a-Doodle Noodle stuffed with mac and cheese to the Meat Me in St. Louis with pepperoni and Italian sausage. You also can make your own combination from a large list of fillers and toppings. Mr. Beet and I ordered the Garden Calzone with eggplant, spinach, zucchini, roasted garlic, white onions, snap peas, mozzarella, ricotta, garlic oil and red sauce.
Did I mention the calzones are the size of your head?
The second calzone we tried was the Figgy Piggy with figs, balsamic onions, boursin, mozzarella, ricotta, garlic honey oil, and red sauce. The Figgy Piggy is also normally served with bacon but asked to have that filling left off. This was a great calzone.
There is also a small menu of salads – from a Strawberry Fields salad to a traditional Caesar. We ordered the Beets Me! salad with arugula, spring mix, toasted walnuts, Mandarin oranges, golden beets, red onions, parmesan cheese, and a citrus vinaigrette. Wonderful. Does it get any better than a calzone and a salad?
I will tell you again, the calzones are enormous. Not even Mr. Beet was able to finish his. You may find yourself wanting to split a calzone with someone else, especially if splurge for a salad as well. 5 out of 5 sprouts.
