Happy What I Ate Wednesday! This week I am highlighting the first day of our trip to the Smoky Mountains. Let’s jump right in shall we?
Our plane landed in Asheville, North Carolina at 8:08am. As we were renting our car I asked the agent if he could recommend a decent place for breakfast and he sent us into West Asheville to a place called Biscuit Head. While I am not a big fan of biscuits and gravy I knew that Chad loves biscuits so we decided to give it a go. We should have known by the enormous long line of hungry people waiting to order that this was going to be delicious. And after a quick glance of the biscuit fixins’ bar we knew we were in for a treat.
Turns out I am a fan of biscuits and gravy, when the gravy is Vegan and Vegetarian. I ordered the gravy flight with three choices and enjoyed the House-made Curried Seitan, Sweet Potato Coconut and the Smoked Tomato Creole gravies. Who knew I would end up a fan of biscuits and gravy?
The biscuits were called “cathead” biscuits because they were the size of a cat’s head. Seriously…huge. Perfect to enjoy with all the flavored butters, honey and jellies as well like this super sweet Fruit Punch butter.
However, my favorite highlight of the meal was the Biscuit Doughnuts with Lemon Curd. There are no words…..
We then drove through the Smoky Mountains into Tennessee and up to our hotel in Pigeon Forge, our base for the week. We ended up napping and missed lunch so we went out for an early dinner. It was very difficult to find decent Veggie- based eats on the Tennessee side of the mountains but we found a pizza joint very near the hotel called Big Daddy’s Pizzeria. Dinner was garlic knots and a margarita pizza.
We did love the bubbled pan the pizza was cooked in!
After dinner we were both craving sweets so we found an ice cream shop up the road called Mad Dog Creamery. We loved all the unique home-churned flavors and had a hard time picking out our favorite flavors. I settled on a scoop of caramel pie ice cream with a shot of espresso drizzled over top.
Have you ever had espresso as an ice cream topper? So delicious! What are you eating this Wednesday? I am linking up with Jenn from Peas and Crayons where there is a What I Ate Wednesday party going on! I’m heading over there to see what YOU’VE been eating!
