HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
From Surgery to Running. I am chronicling my journey from having foot surgery to running again. I had surgery on December 5, 2014 for a bunionectomy which required the breaking of my foot, removing some bone, then receiving 2 screws to hold my foot back together. The recovery process is three months before I am allowed to begin running again.
(WARNING: There are some graphic pictures of my foot below. Nothing too bad but if you don’t like bruising and stitches then don’t look.)
I have a big announcement: I was selected to be on the Rock And Roll Marathon 2015 Rock N Blog Team. This means I have committed to run at least three of their global events, courtesy of the Rock and Roll Tour, and I will also be able to extend race discounts to any of their events for you guys. Cool right? I just need to pick my three races. Dublin? Madrid? Vancouver? I am thinking we will stick closer to home- maybe St. Louis, San Antonio and Portland, Oregon. However, first things first. I can’t run any races until this foot heals.
Just shy of 4 weeks since surgery. The swelling has gone down, the bruising has gone away and the stitches have come out. I have to do physical therapy on my toe just so that I can get the proper movement back. I am sick of wearing the bootie, I am sick of having to sit so much, and I am tired of being so inactive. The pain I had has mostly gone away, though I still have an occasional episode of some sharp pains for a few minutes at a time. For the most part I have to keep reminding myself that I still have a broken foot and need to take it easy.
However, the doctor says my foot is healing nicely. He says my scarring should be minimal and my foot should be good as new as long as I listen to him. And he says no running until March at the earliest and even that may be pushing it. I plan on a busy and active Fall season for sure!
That means I will be cramming in a lot of training so I can be ready for my races. My plan is not to run a race until late May at the earliest.
All I know is these new shoes are just sitting in the corner..…feeling neglected and alone. Soon my pretty, soon.
